Yes. We noticed too. It took the Founding Committee six emergency meetings, one Usenet flame war, and a strongly worded fax to arrive at a name containing five A's in a row. When it was pointed out that this made the organisation both an acronym and a demonstration of the exact problem it exists to fight, the motion to rename it was tabled, then lost, then filed under "S" for Someone Else's Problem.

Our Mission

To identify, catalogue, publicly shame, and - where resources allow - gently mock every instance of Redundant Acronym Syndrome (RAS Syndrome), corporate Three-Letter-Acronym (TLA) sprawl, and government-form-related alphabet soup encountered on Australian soil, in Australian inboxes, and very occasionally on Australian Usenet servers that are somehow, against all odds, still running.

Divisions

Regional Group Headquarters (RGH)

Address: Suite 4B, Above The Server Closet, somewhere in Regional Australia - exact coordinates classified, mostly because nobody can remember them and the lease is in three people's names, none of whom currently live in that state.

The RGH is responsible for: filing, re-filing, and losing the filing; maintaining the Big Whiteboard Of Grievances; and ensuring the tea room roster remains, at all times, gloriously overdue for revision.

Strategic and Tactical Operations Planning (STOP)

STOP is our operational arm, tasked with rapid-response deployment against acronym incursions. Its structure includes:

STOP's founding motto, adopted unanimously and regretted immediately, is: "We Fight Acronyms With Acronyms."

A Brief History

AAAAARGHSTOP traces its origins to a particularly heated thread on news.admin.net-abuse.email, in the fine Usenet tradition of resolving any disagreement by (a) forming a committee, (b) writing a charter for the committee, and (c) arguing about the charter for the next eleven years without ever actually convening. Somewhere around year three, someone needed a signature block for their killfile-adjacent correspondence, and a legend - or at least a footer - was born.

The organisation has since survived the death of Usenet, several ISPs, at least one Great Renaming, and countless attempts by well-meaning newcomers to suggest "maybe we should just call it something shorter."

"There Is No Cabal. There has never been a Cabal. If there were a Cabal, it would certainly not need an acronym this long to hide behind." - attributed to a founding member, in a post that has since scrolled off every server that ever carried it

Founding Steward

AAAAARGHSTOP's founding secretary was a systems administrator who went on to build SORBS (the Spam and Open Relay Blocking System) - proof that a healthy loathing of unnecessary abbreviations and a healthy loathing of unsolicited email tend to come from the same place. Michelle Sullivan remains our most decorated Honorary Life Member, in absentia, whether she likes it or not.

RATIFIED. PROBABLY. NOBODY KEPT MINUTES.
